If you understand the process and plan properly, you can quickly complete Texas Electrician License Renewal. You’ll need to take a quick continuing education course before submitting an application to the state for renewal. Let’s go over the steps one by one, so you can get ready.

Who is required to have a license?

In the state of Texas, anyone who performs electrical work must be licensed. Work in the electrical field is characterized as:

  • Service entrance conductors, as defined by the National Electrical Code, are any labor or material used in installing, maintaining, or extending an electrical wiring system. As well as the appurtenances, apparatus, or equipment used in connection with the use of electrical energy attached to a building, residence, structure, property, or premises.

When did the license requirements take effect?

  • If you operate in the electrical field, the licensing requirements went into force on September 1, 2004.
  • The Apprentice Electrician License Renewal requirements for domestic appliance installers went into force on March 1, 2008.
  • The license requirements for journeyman linemen went into effect on June 1, 2014.
  • The licensing requirements for journeyman industrial workers went into effect on June 1, 2019.

Find out when your electrical license expires.

  • Every year, you must renew your electrical license issued by the state of Texas. Please keep track of the date your license was issued on your calendar so you remember when it’s time to renew.
  • You can search for your license information on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation ( ) website if you don’t know when it was issued.

Finish your Continuing Education requirements.

  • To renew their electrical license in Texas, electricians must complete 4 hours of Texas electrical continuing education every year.

Apply to renew your driver’s license.

  • We recommend waiting 1–2 business days after completing your continuing education to ensure that your hours have been processed with TLDR. After that, you’re free to make a renewal application.
